The BITSA Process

BITSA uses advanced DNA technology to identify the breed/s of your dog. A simple cheek swab from inside your dog's mouth enables the collection of cells for DNA extraction. Your dog's DNA is then referenced against our extensive list of breed signatures, giving your dog its unique breed make-up. Click here to view some of our BITSA heroes and their breed make-up.

Breed Identification Made Easy

Safe and painless, the non-invasive cheek swab test is easy to complete and can be done in the comfort of your own home. Simply rub the supplied cotton swabs on the inside of your dog's cheek, place it in the plastic sleeve provided and return the sample to us.

Is a swab enough? Why not a blood sample?

Buccal (cheek) swabs are an accepted source of DNA evidence in court and are used commonly in human and forensic DNA extraction. The swab provides enough DNA to allow for multiple tests, and can be stored safely for long periods of time. Blood samples require a Vet to take the sample, and during transport and storage the sample can be damaged due to fluctuations in temperature. A buccal swab allows you to take the sample yourself. It is a safe, reliable and low stress way to take a DNA sample from your dog.
