Case Study

Meet Dusty. Dusty's owners became concerned when he started walking into things and had trouble focusing on his ball and toys. They always knew he was some kind of mixed breed that may contain Labrador Retriever but decided to find out for sure. Using the BITSA Test, Dusty ended up with an ancestry result of primary Labrador Retriever.

The BITSA test also informed Dusty's owners that Labrador Retrievers are one of many breeds prone to PRCD, a common eye disease that results in impaired vision and often complete blindness. This knowledge prompted the owners to then take the PRCD DNA test, which confirmed their suspicion that he was affected by the disease, meaning that eventual blindness was likely. Despite Dusty not being a 'pure' labrador, he'd inherited a disease common to Labrador Retrievers. The next step was to visit an ophthalmologist and have his condition assessed. Dusty's owners now know to take greater care when taking Dusty for walks (particularly across roads) and to change the living arrangements to prevent him from hurting himself as his eyesight degenerates.
