Primary Level
A breed detected at primary level represents significant amounts of that breed found in your
dog, usually 50% or more.
A primary level is indicative of that breed being a parent and, in most cases, a dog should show
distinctive behavioural and physical attributes associated with that breed.
Secondary Level
A breed detected at secondary level represents approximately 25% of your dog’s breed make-up.
It is indicative of that breed being at a grandparent level. In most cases the physical attributes of
that breed may not be obvious.
Distant Level
A breed detected at distant level represents low levels (trace amounts) of that breed found in your dog's ancestry, approximately less than 12.5% of your dog's breed make-up. These levels are indicative that the breed is from a great grandparent. Distant breeds may also indicate markers associated with the common ancestry of the dog's breed.
This level may also indicate markers associated with the common ancestry of the dog’s breed
group.
For example, you may submit your dog whose ancestry includes distant levels of the Flat Coated
Retriever - however because the BITSA test currently cannot detect the Flat Coated Retriever
markers, your results may state that your dog has distant ancestry of the Labrador
Retriever - why? Because the Flat Coated Retriever and the Labrador Retriever share a common
ancestry.
Note - This common ancestry occurrence does not happen at primary or secondary level.
